2. Bessie shows resilience when she makes the best of the education that she gets. Her teacher said that she took pride in her work and the teacher admired that about her. She also showed resilience when she worked. She did laundry for a rich person in the story and the rich person said that Bessie never looked down. This shows that even though she did hard work with deadly chemicals like lye, she worked toward her goals. Picking cotton gave your fingers many cuts but the book showed her taking pride in her work. She was born into slavery and even when she was young, she showed resilience by watching her younger siblings and keeping the house in check at age 9. She was powerful and helped African Americans believe in something more.

I agree with you because you wrote a thoughtful response about how Bessie showed resilience in order to reach her goal. I also agree with you on the part where you mentioned that she helped African Americans believe in something more. I agree with you because she helped African Americans believe that they can much more than work in fields or do laundry. So in all I think you wrote a very thoughtful response.

The challenges that Bessie faces are mostly because of racism, sexism, and the time period she grew up in. She was forced to do nothing but domestic work like laundry and cotton-picking and attended a small amount of schooling. Bessie had a hard time getting into many colleges. She was teased by her brother when she couldn't find any job but as a manicurist, attending to a beautyschool instead of a dream college. But she was happy with her life, and she worked quietly, enjoying all the good points she could make of it. She was not accepted into many flight schools because she was African American, or as they said, Negro, and she was a woman. When she finally moved to France for flight school, about all of her problems were erased, and her passion was unleashed. Despite living her dream at the flight school, when Bessie headed back to America she was once again discriminated, but she could brush it off more easily now that she had more power. She would demand that Africans would be allowed to her shows, and of course, it happened.

I agree. Her brother and others made fun of her because she didn't find any other job but the manicurist. But Bessie stayed happy and enjoyed what she could do. I also agree about the point you showed about her problems being erased. "When she finally moved to France for flight school, about all of her problems were erased, and her passion was unleashed." I also added in my blog that she was still discriminated, but had more strength (mental strength).

Bessie faces racism, little money, and picking cotton. Grimes made Bessie face. Bessie had to go to manicure to get the money. The black newspaper place gave her money to go to France. There she went to an aviation school which had hard math but she never complained. She had to face fear because she said her legs shaked when she entered the airplane. These are the problem Bessie faces.

1. First of all, Bessie lived in the time of discrimination against African Americans. They were looked down upon; weren't expected to ever become someone important. Bessie was also a woman, and women weren't normally independent and educated. So, being an African American woman was a challenge in itself. Growing up, Bessie and her family were poor. Bessie would stay home to take care of her younger sister while her mom was out cleaning houses, just to help her family survive. Her father also left the family when she was very young, and her family had to cope with a single parent. Bessie wasn't given a full education as a child, because she had to help her family pick cotton after her father left. Her teacher saw hope in her, but was afraid she might never come back to complete her education. But, Bessie was determined to live a better life. She worked hard as a child and earned money for her family. She told herself she would live a better life, and that kept her going.

1.Bessie had to face many challenges in her life to live out her dream. She started out not knowing what she wanted to do in her life. She started out working in the fields. She also did other people's laundry. Those are the first challenges Bessie faced.Sadly Bessie didn't have enough money to continue trading school. That is the second challenge Bessie faced. Then she went to Chicago to earn money. Another challenge is her skin color.Another challenge is that she was a woman. But she learned how to fly anyways and earned a lot of money while doing stunts in a plane. She over come her fears and challenges to reach her dream.I think the story about Malala is a lot like Talking about Bessie.

Question 1. As Bessie Coleman grows up, she faces many challenges. One challenge is that she is colored. This is very bad in the olden days and it could have a huge effect on you and your family. Another thing that Bessie Coleman faces in her life is having to be a poor family. This is bad because Bessie had to face many problems in her life and had to pick cotton and also had to do things for farmer in order to earn money. Another thing that Bessie faces in order to live her dream is having too do jobs that don't pay very well. Another things is having to learn french. This is a challenge because she only can have a year due to lack of money. Then, she has to learn all the parts and learn all the things that a pilot needs to know. After she does this, she gets her licence she accomplishes her dream but has to do all these things.

I like how you talked about how she and her family was very poor. You really explained on how that affected many of her problem she faced in her life and journey to become a pilot. I also admire that you said," Another thing is having to learn french." I didn't even think about that. Although it wasn't the biggest problem it was still a difficulty she faced.

I think Bessie was very relentless in overcoming her dream in becoming a pilot because even though only non-colored people were allowed to be a pilot, Bessie did not care so she did everything in her powers to achieve her goal of flying a plane. Bessie Coleman faced many challenges throughout her difficult journey of being a pilot but she fought through them and achieved her life-long girl. One of her hardest challenges was when she saw that they mentioned no negro's were allowed to fly so that was the thing that made it even harder for Bessie to fly. Bessie's first job was a job where she did men's manicure but she quickly realized that she did not like the job so she fought for her dream as becoming a pilot. Grimes described Bessie always fighting to become a pilot even if someone stopped her. One time, Bessie was not wearing a seat belt so it was probably not a good idea for Bessie because she crashed... Leading to death. :(. Although, everybody will remember her because of what she did. A lot of people respect her because she fought for her dream. They like her because of who she is.

1.Bessie Coleman faced a lot of challenges to make her dream come true. First of all the main problem is her skin color. Back then when Bessie Coleman was alive, racism was a serious problem. Bessie Coleman is an African American. African Americans and white people weren't treated the same. Instead African Americans were treated poorly and white people were treated nicely. She also did different jobs to earn money. Bessie's family weren't really a wealthy family. So she was a manicurist at a beauty store. She also did laundry to earn money. Because her family was poor Bessie didn't have enough money to go to the aviator school. She was an African American and her gender was a female. That made it harder to get close to her dreams. Back then it was very rare thing for an female African American to learn how to fly an airplane. After she went through all these things she finally got to fly an airplane. But for Bessie sadly death came first than her dreams. She sadly died from a plane crash.

In the story talking about Bessie, the protagonist Bessie faces problems that affect her dream of being a pilot. In the story, the time that Bessie is in is when it was very hard to get jobs if you were an African American! So many people doubted that she would do a big thing. Bessie worked very hard to be a pilot. At first Bessie was going to a school of learning to be a pilot. Though one day she ran out of money to keep going to the school. After, she read in a newspaper that colored people had better lives in Chicago. Chicago was the place that she would go next. She went with the director of the newspaper and asked for him to take her to France. There she learned how to be a pilot with the money she made at the manicure. After Bessie became a world known pilot.

I also like how you included the journey of becoming the pilot. You talked about how she had to drop out of that college, and how she ended up moving to Chicago. And I agree that she worked hard, she worked extremely hard and believed which is how she became the amazing pilot she was. I overall, completely agree.

#1. Bessie Coleman has faced a number of challenges in order to become a pilot. First of all, she was a negro and was a woman. Back then, African Americans weren't treated like whites, so it was hard for them to get a job as a pilot. She had to face racism. Her family wasn't rich, and she had to work in the fields or do the laundry. Schools didn't accept her because she was a woman, or she was a negro. But Bessie didn't give up like many other African American woman probably would. Bessie worked hard to become the first African American pilot. Bessie had to learn French in order to go to the Aviator school in France. Finally, Bessie was able to fly an airplane and experience what it was like to fly. Sadly, Bessie's death came before she could start thinking about building an aviator school to teach children.

Cara, I agree with you. As we know Bessie Coleman was a negro and a girl. It was already a big problem that she wanted to become a pilot and was black, but being a girl can basically make it even worse. Plus it is also true that it was very hard for black people because they weren't thought of better than white people.

2. Bessie shows resilience that leads to her goal in becoming a pilot throughout her life. First off, when she does laundry for a business, she always told herself that she wouldn't be doing that forever, and that it was only temporary. She also looks into people's eyes when she delivers the laundry, because she has a lot of self-pride and resilience about who she is and where she came from. Bessie also shows resilience when she can't pay the trade school tuition bill, and she simply says that she will be back. She ends her last moments in that school not crying, not moping, but having a party. She feels that there is nothing to be sad about, because she will be back. She also has resilience when she works in the fields picking cotton, by having hope and persevering on, despite all the hardships that she faces. In conclusion, Bessie Coleman has a lot of resilience and always makes the best out of every situation.

Question 2: Nikki Grimes is able to present the different challenges that Bessie Coleman faces through her life. One of the problems, that Grimes shows in her story is the fact that Bessie is African American. This means that she is treated differently because of her skin tone. In the time that Bessie was born was when people treated white and black people differently. Whites were treated better and were thought of better. The black people were basically doing work for them for money, because they weren't thought of high enough. This means people thought that white people were better that them. Another thing that stopped Bessie from achieving her dreams was that she was a women. Knowing that she is black and a women this most likely made people think that she would never become a pilot. Women in the time she was born were also not thought highly. Still women didn't do as much as what the men did. It was only common for women in France to become a pilot. Although, even if Bessie was black and a girl she never let it get in the way of being a pilot.

2. Bessie shows resilience when she was in aviator school. Even though she saw a student flying a plane and then fall down 300 ft while test driving a plane, she never gave up her courage and confidence inside of her for her ultimate goal. It's like she never even left any one of her trait in the words that are related to building up resilience. It's so amazing to see the first African-American woman to be able fly a plane has gotten so high in the celebrity state, even I was shocked. She has been so encouraging to so many people, for example, the young fan saw just a glimpse of her face and thought she could accomplish anyone of her goals that she'd set. But Bessie's day of fate had finally come. Bessie died from not fastening her seat belt when riding the plane to find a perfect landing spot and died when her plane crashed with another passenger. Bessie was a really good woman.

Prompt 1: Bessie faced a lot in order to live her dream. In the beginning she did not know what she wanted to do, but she tried hard and did not give up. When she was in Chicago, her brother John Coleman went into the nail salon she was working at and started blabbering. He said, " ' You Negro women ain't never goin' to fly. Not like those women I saw in France.' " He got every one to laugh, but then Bessie had had enough. " 'That's it,' she said. " 'You just called it for me!' " Another, and the most important, is racism and sexism. Her family and her had to do the laundry and pick cotton. She applied to many schools, but did not get in because of her race and she was a women. A lot of people treated Negro women and men very differently. But Bessie never gave up, not even after she found her dream. She moved to France, leaving her family. She got enrolled into a flight school. She had known that flying had been her dream. When she went back to America to continue flying, she was still discriminated. But she lived with it, especially because she knew she could fly. She did a lot to show girls, women, men, and all should be treated equally, no matter what race they are. When she became a famous pilot, she made the African American/Negro people come to her show.

1# In the time period Bessie lived in there was a lot of racism, sexism, and poverty for almost all Negros. Bessie worked in the fields picking cotton or doing laundry at home. Wherever Bessie was she was always trying her hardest. Wether she was picking cotton in the hot, hot sun, to going to school as often as she could, she would be working hard. Bessie was never in school for long but when she was learning and getting education she tried her hardest. Bessie always learned and believed. When she heard about the school for pilots in France, she realized for the first time in her life what she wanted to become. When her brother found her working in a manicure salon he teased her about her dream of becoming a pilot. He told her she wasn't going to make it. She was from a colored family and she was a women. These were the two biggest struggles she had in her life. Negros back then were treated very poorly and women were of only use when it came to housework. But Bessie didn't work against these traits of hers, she worked with them. She was proud of who she was. When she finally raised enough money she set off to France where she started college at a school for pilots. this was a huge achievement because it was extremely uncommon for a person of mixed rase to go to college and get a good education. This also was a big deal because she did not get many college opportunities. Now Bessie could live her dream and go to college. When Bessie made her way back to her home in America she was once again set up into the life of the racist world. But Bessie helped change that. She said that if her friends and family and fellow Negros weren't allowed to come to her shows, than she wouldn't do her shows at all. So of course she got her way.

I agree with you. Whatever situation Bessie was in, she would always be hardworking, while trying her best. Even though a lot of racism was involved at that time period, Bessie was still proud of who she was, as an African American girl. Many people doubted that she could reach her goal, including John Coleman, her brother, who teased her at the barber shop. After that, she made her decision and was able to get a good amount of education, which was very rare.

Prompt 1: In order to live her dream of being a pilot, Bessie Coleman, the main protagonist, had to face many discouraging challenges. Many of these problems caused Bessie to have some doubt. However, she kept trying her best and never gave up. For example, before Bessie was a pilot, she did manicures for men at the barber shop in her home town. Once, her brother, John Coleman, teased her about her dream as a pilot, allowing everyone else in the shop to laugh at her, loudly. That's when Bessie had made her special decision. After all, the author wrote, "'That's it,' she said. 'You just called it for me!"' Bessie had gave up her manicure job to search for her dream. After gaining a large amount of money for going to the French flight school, she was able to travel to France, while Robert Abbott had pay her long passage. In school, she would be the only female of the class, learning about how to control the parts of the airplane. Many other people doubt that Bessie could be a pilot, since she was a girl and an African American. Though, Bessie was able to accomplish her wonderful dream, anyway.

Bessie faced many trials and challenges to have the resilience to become the first African American lady to soar in the skies with a plane . Her challenges though were tough for her because she was working at plantation where it was nearly impossible to reach a goal to get, where whites were only allowed to do. But one trait that achieved her to the impossible was her hard work and the trait of never being able to give up what she hated, like the laundry she did. Another challenge she faced was lack of everything about her. In that time people were sexist and racist toward everything Bessie was trying to do. Like, when her brother, John Coleman made fun how that in France he fought with together with French woman pilots that were better than her. The brother got so stuck in the way society treated them that he accepted the racism over the whites. But Bessie had relicense to fight over what she wanted to show for her culture and race. This is what Bessie faced through the challenges and how she was able to get what her brother thought was arrogant.

#1 Bessie faces descrimination, segregation and merely gender separation. At the time that had not been fully faced, biracial me could have high jobs, but could women? NO, when her brother introduces pilots to her in a mean and bragging and teasing sort of way she does not give up on trying, and I mean that she goes from job to good job to great job straight to piloting. I think in her mind she is thinking that she wanted to quit in a little time when she was with another family but the she looked up at the heavens and saw how far she had gone and how many lives she changed. He biggest challenge was if she believed in herself, not if anyone else did. Because in the air, that is what mattered most.

1. Bessie Colman has to face a lot of challenges to acchieve her goal as a pilot. Even tough for like the first 20 years or so, Bessie had no idea whatsoever about adream as flying. But first, her family was poor. She usually did work for the day and rarely, school. But when Bessie was at school, she learned a lot!!! And then, as she grew older, she went to trade school but her family and herself couldn't afford to pay the cost for the school. She had no time for despair and grief. So, Bessie started NAIL POLLISHING for some money. And one random day, Bessie got the aviation idea from somewhere. Now, she was a woman got sexual descrimination in those days. And she was an African American who got racial descrimination. And she broke both of those barriers to be the person of her dreams, a pilot stunt master daredevil.

Bessie shows much resilience in this article. She had many a numerous amounts of sacrifices. So she really dedicated much of her life to prove things. She worked extra hours at a job to raise money for her tuition. She was planning to go to a school in France to learn how to become a pilot. She might of been inspired by those women who also were pilots. Except she had never heard about black women pilots. She had to be a good student to be excepted and it was even harder because of her race. Bessie did show much resilience.

Prompt 2:Bessie shows resilience by going through many hard challenges. One example of a challenge Bessie had to face was that she was a slave. She showed resilience by doing the work even though it was hard. She did laundry for a rich person even though she was working with a dangerous chemical called lye. She also had to pick cotton for the white people even though it gave her cuts and bruises. Though these hard challenges hurt her, but her head still remained high. Another example of her showing resilience is when she was teased about becoming a pilot. While she was giving manicures to men her brother stopped by and teased her by saying she could never fly a plane better than the French ladies. Because she was angry and embarrassed she proved her brother wrong by becoming a pilot. So overall Bessie Coleman had to go through many challenges in order to reach her goal

(1) The challenges that Bessie faces to try to become a pilot is many things that have to do with things like how she is African american and that she is a woman. She had to do so many things to be a pilot because she had to try to convince people that woman can go to flight school. She had to face all these people that did not believe in her, she had face all her fears. Before she became a pilot she did laundry and picked cotton in the cotton fields. She then became a pilot and left her family to go to Chicago to become a pilot. She then became a manicure worker in a beauty salon. She went to flight school and then she became a pilot and also watched a plane crash and also she crashed. Bessie was a very smart person in the flight school and she always solved many of the questions that she got from the teacher.

1. There are many challenges Bessie faced throughout her life to live the dream of a aviator. When she was born, she was of African American descent and she was a girl. She grew up on a plantation where she picked cotton and other crops on the place. She later then went to Chicago to find a better place to settle down. She heard about famous Black women in a Black newspaper. When she arrived she worked at a manicure salon where her brother one day talked about how she couldn't be a pilot because she was a woman and African American. Then that triggered her she went to the newspaper maker for African Americans and he paid Bessie a passage to France. Bessie went to a language school where she learned French and got a job to pay for her schools there at France. When she wen there was only one aviation school for women and she applied. People doubted her that she could make it but she did and lived her dream.
